America on Purpose (2009) by Craig Ferguson is an amusing auto-biography of the comedian and now late night TV host. Ferguson grew up in Scotland, became an alcoholic and comedian and eventually emigrated to the US and made it.
The book’s best parts are the accounts of growing up in Scotland and becoming part of the entertainment scene in the UK in the 1980s and Ferguson’s alcoholism which is graphically, humourously and well depicted.
Ferguson’s move to the US is also something that anyone who has lived in the US as a foreigner and considered emigrating to will identify with.
It’s not a great book, but it is far from terrible too.
