Winter’s Bone (2010) is an excellent gritty film about life in the Ozarks. It’s a bleak portrayal of what like is like poor rural people in the area.
Ree is a teenager with a mother who has gone insane and whose father has just disappeared. She is raising her 12 year old brother and 6 year old sister. She learns that her father who spent much of his time making speed has just skipped a court appearance and that he put their house up as collateral for his bail. If he can’t be found the house will taken away from Bree and her family. The story follows Bree as she searches for her father.
It’s an engrossing film that lives up the reviews that has got in the US. It’s remarkable to see films from the US that have a setting that is interesting and have a narrative that can propel the film along as well. The film has something to say but that is background to strong characters and an engrossing plot.
