Submarine  (wikipedia) (2010) is a charming, quite funny coming of age story directed by Richard Ayoade and based on a book by Joe Dunthorne. It’s the story of a 15 year old boy who is impressively self-centred. He has a crush on a Jordana who is something of a misfit and a loner at school. His parents are experiencing some difficulties in their marriage and the arrival of his mother’s former flame in a nearby house causes further strain.  What makes the film is the careful, clever way that it has been put together. The characters are believable and sympathetic but are also nicely exaggerated. The story is interesting and believable. The film is a fine first feature from Ayoade that shows great promise.
