The Men Who United the States (2013) by Simon Winchester is another well crafted historical book from a master of non-fiction historical stories.
The book looks at the development of the US through looking at the ‘elements’ wood, earth, water, fire and metal.
Wood covers the early exploration, earth the geological mapping and discoveries, water the canals, fire rail and then road and then metal the telegraph and telecommunications beyond.
It’s not a bad read. It’s not the best Winchester book but it’s still well done and has plenty of fine stories.
