Dataclysm

Dataclysm (2014) by Christian Rudder is a dissapointing book from the lead analyst of OK Cupid. The book does have quite a few interesting facts and makes a lot of good points but it doesn’t all hang together particularly well. The OK Cupid blog was fantastic but unfortunately the book isn’t as good.

The explosion of data online allows a lot of analysis that wasn’t possible prior to people going online en masse. A dating website also shows people making choices in a way that exposes their biases.  Also the online lynch mob mentality in the mass data age is shown with twitter witch burnings being examined.

The dating data is interesting and the book is worth a read but somehow it isn’t as arresting as expected.
