How we got to Now:Six Innovations that Made the Modern World (2014) by Steven Johnson is an excellent book that examines six major developments that changed the world. Johnson looks at lighting, refrigeration, clocks, glass, hygiene and clocks and weaves a tale around them.
The examination of these technologies, the technologies they then enabled and the changes that occurred because of them is reminiscient of the series ‘Connections’ by James Burke. It’s also similarly well done.
The book is a breeze to read, it’s fascinating and it’s very enjoyable for anyone into the study of how technology and science changes society and how society changes technology.
