Straight to Hell: True Tales of Deviance, Debauchery, and Billion-Dollar Deals by John LeFevre is a collection of outrageous stories about LeFreve experiences as a bond dealer, mostly in Hong Kong. LeFevre edited and wrote the very funny @GSElevator or Goldman Sachs elevator twitter feed.
The stories really are outrageous, there’s incredible amounts of booze, a lot of drugs and quite a few hookers. Humour is really hard to do well in written form and this book doesn’t carry it off unless the mention of cocaine, hookers, men rubbing their bits in things and so on makes you think anything after is hilarious. It would actually work better as a TV series about bankers in Hong Kong although it would be hard to get made due to the drug use and arguable misogyny. Still, if anyone ever gets a few good comedy writers together to make ‘FILTH – Failed in London Try Hong Kong’ it could be brilliant.
It’s not a terrible book and LeFevre is a pretty decent writer, but Straight to Hell doesn’t work.
